RESPONSIBLE
GAMING
Gambling is entertainment with a cost — never a way to make money, pay a bill or recover a loss. This page explains the rules, the warning signs, the tools that work and where to get free, confidential help today.
The age rule is absolute
You must be 18 or over to gamble in the United Kingdom. It is a criminal offence for an operator to allow anyone under 18 to gamble, and every UK-licensed operator must verify your age and identity before you deposit or withdraw. If you share a device with someone under 18, use parental controls such as Net Nanny or Qustodio to block gambling content.
Six rules our editors follow, and recommend
- Set a deposit limit first. Decide the number before you fund an account, not after a losing run. Every UK-licensed operator must let you set daily, weekly and monthly limits.
- Treat it as an entertainment cost. If the money would be missed, it should not be wagered.
- Never chase a loss. Increasing your stake to recover is the single most reliable way to lose more.
- Use a time limit too. Reality checks and session reminders exist for a reason — switch them on.
- Never gamble to escape. Not to fix money worries, not to numb stress, not while drinking.
- Take breaks. A cool-off period of 24 hours to 6 weeks is available on request at any UK-licensed operator.
Warning signs
It may be time to stop and talk to someone if you recognise any of these: gambling for longer or with more money than you intended; borrowing money or selling possessions to fund it; hiding it from family; feeling anxious, guilty or irritable when you are not gambling; missing work, study or family commitments; or believing a big win will solve a money problem. None of this makes you a failure — it is a common, treatable pattern, and help is free.
Tools that actually work
- GAMSTOP — one free registration self-excludes you from every UK-licensed online operator for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. It cannot be reversed early, which is exactly the point. gamstop.co.uk
- Bank gambling block — most UK banks and building societies offer a free, instant block on gambling transactions, usually with a cooling-off delay before it can be lifted.
- Blocking software — Gamban and BetBlocker block gambling websites and apps across your devices; BetBlocker is free.
- Operator limits — deposit, loss, stake and session limits, reality checks, cool-off and permanent self-exclusion are all legally required and all self-serve.

Our own commitment
Every page on this website carries an 18+ marker. We do not target or appeal to under-18s, we never suggest gambling is a solution to financial difficulty, we never present it as a source of income, and we never publish an operator that fails our licensing or safer-gambling checks. If you believe any content here falls short of that, tell us at editorial@prestigemark.co.uk and we will act on it.
When the fun stops, stop. Gambling can be addictive. National Gambling Helpline: 0808 8020 133 — free, confidential, 24/7.
